About the course

This course is a must if you missed out on education earlier. It is suitable for anyone who does not have entry requirements (eg A levels, National Diploma, AVCE etc) but wishes to start to study at HND or Degree level in order to enter a career in the field of Information Technology, Computing or Multimedia.

How do you study?

You will study a range of units each having the potential to be awarded at  level 3 (equivalent to A level). Each unit is worth 3 credits. For successful completion of the access course you will need a minimum of 45 credits at level 3 and 60 credits overall. Each unit at level 3 is awarded a pass, merit or distinction. The units that you will study will come from your core subject area; this can be found by clicking on the more info box. Along with your core subject units you will study a range of subjects that build and prepare you for academic study at university level. You are also allowed to take one GCSE alongside this diploma in either Maths or English.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment will take the form of coursework, presentations or in class assessments depending on the unit you are studying.

We also support you through the university application process with tutorials. These are designed to offer guidance and support throughout the learning process.

We do however recommend checking the entry requirements for your course at your preferred university.

Entry requirements

All applicants will be invited to attend an Access Workshop where full course information is given and you will be expected to complete the Initial Assessment and a written excersise.

What will I do on the course?

You will study a range of topics, including Introduction to IT, Computer Systems, Business Applications, Internet Technologies, Introduction to Programming and Introduction to Networks. All students will also do the Core of Access to HE – Study and Research skills, together with Maths at an appropriate level to what you know already.

Assessment

You will be assessed using a range of methods including essays, project work, presentations and discussions. There are very few tests on this course.

What can I do after the course?

Students can progress onto a Higher National Diploma, Foundation Degree or Honours degree in an IT, computing-related subject, Multimedia or into Teaching. Students can also seek employment with this Access qualification. A student from 3 years ago is now part of the teaching team on this Course. Another became Student of the Year at the University of Plymouth and proceeded to a Multimedia Honours degree. These are not exceptions, only two of the many people that have gone on to a degree, or into work with computers. The Course, if completed, is indeed a life changer, a new start.

Structure

This is a 1 year course starting in September and is studied over 2 days per week from 9.00am to 4.30pm.

Support

On this course you will be ale to access a great deal of support with your studies. Staff in the Learning Resource Centre are able to assist you with essay writing techniques and the use of Microsoft Office applications. Your personal and subject tutors are on hand to help you with any matter which will facilitate your successful completion of the course.

Some applicants may be eligible for financial support on this course to assist with childcare, transport etc. Eligibility for financial assistance from the Learner Support Fund will be determined by individual circumstances.

If you are under 24 years of age, you may be eligible for fee remission. Information will be given within the workshop and interview, however if your require more information contact the college and speak to one of the admissions administrators for further details.

If you are 24 years of age  or over you are likely to be eligible for a 24+ Advanced Learnng Loan to cover the costs of your tuition and registration.

Additional Information
