Student Study Routes
Studying for a career in software in Cornwall has a variety of routes. Ideally a student would start at the beginning with a GCSE in Computer Science and work their way through but that is not a complete necessity. Colleges and universities can take students in at later stages. So though there are routes through the studies laid out below, please do not take this as gospel truth. Contact the individual institutions directly to see what they are looking for in a student.
Years 10 & 11 at School
Whilst still at school Computer Science GCSE is the first available choice into a career path towards a career in the software industry. Though not available at all schools don’t think that this will stop your options later on. Students can still be taken on at later stages. And there is also the next stage.
Post 16 Education – Sixth Forms & Colleges
Technical Certificate in Digital Technologies (Software and Application) Level 2
will give those who do not have a GCSE in Computer Science a start on the study path to a career. No previous knowledge is needed to take this certificate course. This Level 2 Technical Certificate in Digital Technologies aims to provide you with a range of essential technical practical skills and knowledge that will equip you to seek employment in one of three key areas within the Digital Industries environment or prepare you for further learning. Following successful completion of this qualification you will be able to work in a support role dealing with systems and infrastructure, software issues or web and social media. This may be in a dedicated support team or as part of a general ICT team depending on size of the organisation.
‘A’ Level Computer Science
‘A’ Levels can be taken either in a few sixth forms or at the Truro, Penwith and Callywith Colleges. Again not everyone on these courses has taken computer science GCSE prior to the ‘A’ level. Approach the colleges and ask.
Software Development Technical Baccalaureate
This is a two year course, like ‘A’ levels, in two stages. Year one provides the Advanced Technical Certificate in Digital Technologies Level 3 and progresses into the Advanced Technical Diploma in Application Development Level 3 for year 2. The Tec Bacc is equivalent to 4 ‘A’ levels and provides the UCAS points to continue with education into university as with ‘A’ levels. The City & Guilds Tech Bacc has been designed to bridge the gap between education and employment and combines Technical Qualification together with Workplace Skills. The Tech Bacc aligns itself with employers skill requirements to ensure students are learning the crucial skills required to set them apart from the competition. It achieves this by not only giving you a City & Guilds Technical Qualification but also the professional workplace skills.
Software Developer Technical Apprentice – launching soon
A Software Development Technician typically works as part of a software development team, and their role will typically include, interpreting simple design requirements, implementing code whilst under supervision and testing that specific components meet the intended functionality. As an apprentice you will work as part of a company and study at the same time usually with one day a week in college.
18 Years and Above
Software Development Apprenticeships Level 4
continues on from the level 3 apprenticeship if taken or by itself after taking ‘A’ levels or the Technical Baccalaureate. Gain experience in the work place at the same time as earning a living. Used as improving employee development within the workplace as well as for students. The apprenticeship is designed around what it is that software companies actually want their staff to learn that will be beneficial to the industry.
